It was May 29, 1953 that Edmund Hillary and his climbing partner, Tenzing Norgay, were the first to reach the summit of the highest peak in the world. Hillary took the photo with a Kodak Retina camera using Kodachrome film. Hillary is said to have refused a photograph when Tenzing offered to return the favor.
